# 14 PIERRE BALMAIN, May 18, 1914 - June 29 1982
French fashion designer from Paris, France, born as Pierre Alexandre Claudius Balmain, better known as Pierre Balmain, known as one of the most respected designer in the industry and the founder of the house of Balmain. Many notable designers have worked for Balmain in the past. Balmain’s mother operated a fashion boutique with her sisters and his father died when he was only seven years old. Balmain was fashion inspired since a young age. He studied architecture in 1933 and also worked as a drawing freelancer for Robert Piquet. In 1934, Balamain was offered to work as a designer for Edward Molyneux, where he remained for about 5 years. By 1945 Balmain opened house of Balmain, showcased his first collection in Vogue. From that point Balmain’s career as a designer was climbing, he dressed many celebrities as well a royal ladies. Balmain traveled the world promoting his fashion line and in 1955 even earned received the prestigious Neiman Marcus Award. Balmain was not only recognized for his opulent and elegant fashion styles, he also designed costumes and perfumes. Balmain had a long fashion career and many notable credits. Balmain died from liver cancer at the age of 68. The Balmain legacy continues and in the past few years become more popular.

It’s been recorded that the Ancient Greeks wore animal hair socks during the 8th Century BC. However, the earliest pair of socks survived is from Egypt, from 300-500 AD. The socks were of Naalbidding and considered split toe socks for sandal wearing.
