Featured Destination

MAUI, HAWAII, U.S.A.

By: Editor-In-Chief Giselle Trujillo, March 2015

If you are looking for a romantic, relaxing and safe adventurous getaway, Maui, Hawaii, is the the destination for you.  This island is absolutely magnificent, delicious foods, friendly people, scenic nature, fabulous beaches and breathtaking sunsets.

ABOUT MAUI, HAWAII
The County of Maui in the state of Hawaii is located in the North Pacific Ocean, about five and a half hours from Los Angeles, California and about eleven hours with one stop from New York City or New Jersey. Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiin Islands and the 17th largest Island in the United States. Some popular towns in Maui are Hana, Ka’anapali, Kapalua, Kihei, Kula, Lahaina, Makawo, Makena, Pa’ia and Wailea. This beautiful Island is known for whale watching, mountains, breath taking sunsets, volcanoes, waterfalls, clear water beaches, surfing and sporadic rain showers. Maui is a very laid back and nature oriented place, expect to see fruits and vegetables trees in peoples backyards. The locals sell theirs fruits along the side of the roads on the honer system, meaning no one is attending the stand, buyer leaves money in a small box. It’s two major industries are agriculture (pineapples, macadamia nuts, coffee, exotic tropical flowers, sugar and papayas) and tourism, making Maui a highly desirable location. One month in Maui was just not enough for us.

HANA - Located in the Eastern end of the Island. Go to Hana by traveling the long winding road of Hana Highway along the northern shore. Hana Highway can be dangerous due to its one car narrow winding roads. Once you are there, you will see that it’s a very isolated place with tons of greens and beautiful beaches. Expect to find animals walking on the road, limited shopping and zero commercial importance. Hana is a secluded oasis, very peaceful, up country, beautiful and natural place. A place you go to if you want to be away from society and want to reach total relaxation. It has been mentioned that Oprah Winfrey owns a beautiful chunk of land there.

KA’ANAPALI - Located in the Western end of the Island. Ka’anapali is a very commercialized area with some popular resorts and lot’s of shopping. Expect to find some beautiful beaches, crowds and tons of franchises.

KAPALUA - Located in the Northwest end of the Island, north of Ka’anapali. Kapalua is an incredible place, expect to come across some of the most beautiful beaches ever and incredible green natural landscaping. Kapalua is a melting pot of climates, ranging from rainbows to cloudy skies, beaming hot sun and short rain showers. Expect to see turtles by the rocks in the beaches, surfing by the bay, five stars resorts and lots of cool condos, snorkelers, pineapple farms and delicious cuisines. While in Kapalua, visit Napili, a very fun and laid-back small town.

KIHEI- Located in the South side of the Island along the coast. Kihei is a busy area, tons tall buildings, condos, small hotels, town houses and a lots of shopping malls/plazas. Here is where you can find almost every chain store from A to Z. Expect to find tons of Sport bars, a happening nightlife, really nice beaches, peacocks walking in the middle of busy roads and outstanding sunsets.

KULA - Located almost in the center Island. Kula is rural area with almost no commercial popularity. There are two parts of Kula the upper and lower. Upper Kula has a cooler climate and is close to the Haliakala National Park. Lower Kula is known for growing some vegetables and carnations. Kula offers some fantastic views from it’s high peaks.

LAHAINA - Located southwest of the island. Lahaina is a high touristy area along the water about 2 miles long. Cruise ships docking, boats parked everywhere for their daily excursions, busy street with tons of jewelry shops, specialty shops, restaurants, art galleries and a busy nightlife. While in Lahaina visit the Banyan Tree in Courthouse Square while you have some ice cream. Outside the touristy there is a pretty normal town with regular sized houses and waterfront properties with a small parked in front.

MAKAWAO - Located North of the island. This small town is very interesting, unique and a great place to walk around and relax, it’s up in the mountains and one main road is it’s most popularity. It’s a very quiet town with little traffic. Some small antique shops, jewelry shops and a few restaurants. Makawao has that Western feel, you can buy cowboy boots in a one of the specialty shops.

MAKENA - Located South of the island. This area has some of the most great secluded snorkeling waters. The further you go the more isolated it will get, expect to drive on dirt roads and not pavement. You will find other snorkelers along the way. Along the road you will see the clear waters and on the other side volcanic lava. You can find some amazing beaches that are government protected and no swimming or snorkeling is allowed and when you see it, you will understand why, the water is clear teal and some amazing tropical fish swimming around. You will also find some over the top mansions on the road. This area is highly monitored by local security.

PA’IA - Located North of the island. This small town is fantastic. Pa’ia is the windsurfing capital of the world. This quaint fun town has the whole package. Excellent dining, fun 24 hours a day, cool shops, hippies, hitchhikers, famous people, fun beaches, live bands, beach camping, fresh fruit and vegetable markets, cool people and best fish foods ever. Expect to run into all cultures from around world, this place is a melting pot, music, surfers everywhere and no commercial vive. Pa’ia is a must place to visit.

WAILEA - Located South of the island. Wailea is all about money. Expect to find five stars resorts and gated communities here. High end European and/or American designer boutiques. Nice beaches, super clean streets/roads and well manicured landscaping everywhere.

AIRPORTS - Hana Airport (HNM), Kahului (OGG), West Maui Kapalua (JHM)

ACTIVITIES - Beach Picnics, Biking , Day trips around the Island, Dinner Cruises, Dining, Fishing, Go Upcountry, Golf, Maui Luau, Parasialing, Romantic Walks, Shopping , Snorkeling, Sugar Cane Train, Surfing, Visit A Spa, Whale Watching.

The Kapalua Ritz-Carlton is a beachfront luxury hotel resort surrounded by beautiful landscaping with an upscale Polynesian like decoration and a beautiful golf course.   Staff is very friendly and professional.   Hotel and pool are very quiet, well kept and very clean.   We stayed in a suite that was absolutely exquisite, luxurious and beautiful.    This property offers access to their Concierge Lounge for an additional fee, the best lounge we’ve ever visited so far.   This is an outstanding and  top notch hotel.

Menu is pricy, but worth every bite, staff is perfectly attentive and friendly and food is beyond delicious. We visited Humu several times.

Fun steak house with Australian decorations.  The Kihei location was outstanding, excellent steaks, sides, appetizers and fantastic service, just what we’de expect from Outback, a great place to eat and relax.  Usually very consistent across the board with their food and services, except the Lahaina location, which was a total disaster from the lobster, steak to management, they didn't have a clue about food or customer service.

Our favorite was heavily marinated and flavorful chicken with white rice, which they gave you a full container of.  The most economical place to eat in Maui with excellent daily specials.

The Greek Village

The most delicious Greek food i have ever had many in years.   This is not a fancy elegant restaurant, it is simple, calm and very clean and for me this important.    The service is excellent and now let’s discuss the food.   The food quality is incredibly delicious, clean, fresh, delicious and excellent portions.  This restaurant is always full or packed with wait time during the weekends, best time to visit is weekdays before 1pm.  I have not tried everything on their menu, but everything we have tried has been perfectly cooked and delicious.

Giselle’s THE GREEK VILLAGE favorites....

Their baked pita is outstanding, warm with olive oil essence.   The lightest and freshest cucumber yogurt sauce (tzatziki) i have ever had, honestly the most delicious. The most delicious stuffed grape leaves (dolmadakia) i have ever had, soft, delicious with excellent flavors.  Excellent spinach and cheese pie (spanakopita) and fried zucchini with garlic dip (kolokithakia).  Excellent salads.   And my absolute favorite is their grilled seafood platter which is super delicious if you love seafood, which by the way, the most tender seafood that meats in your mouth, this dish includes yellow rice, grilled vegetables with grilled seafood on top, shrimp, calamari and octopus. For dessert they have some delicious options from rice pudding, custards to baklava, which is very delicious as well.   This is a restaurant that cares about quality in their food with a tight menu.  Their menu is perfectly balanced, not too many options where you can go crazy, but enough options for vegetarians, seafood lovers and lamb lovers and everyone is happy.  Perfect noise level with beautiful Greek music playing and delicious home cooked meals aromas.  Kali Orexi!     Peace, Love & Hugs Giselle Trujillo

Featured Restaurant of The Month

Featured Product of The Month

AYARA PRODUCTS

Ayara Products is not just another brand with Thai branding, they are authentic Thai family tradition flavors.  Ayara is an actual Thai cuisine restaurant in Los Angeles, California, where the owners turned their passionate family recipes and shared them in their restaurant, and as any great restaurant serving delicious foods with a great following and much request for their sauces, they began crafting their top sauces and bottled them under AYARA products for retail. AYARA products Thai sauces are also selling in Chelsea Market Basket in New York.   These sauces are crafted in California with traditional Thai family recipes from fresh and local ingredients.  Shelf life is short for the obvious reasons of fresh ingredients and this is exactly what you want if you are want to consume the essence of home cooked meals and vegetarian friendly.  I love the clean simplicity of their packaging, very organic, colorful and memorable.   I tried their Thai Peanut Sauce and honestly very impressed how fresh this exotic sauce taste.  This sauce is so fresh with plenty of chopped peanuts and herbs.  This is as close as it will get as if i made my own sauces in my kitchen.  This sauce is so delicious and goes well as a dip, spread or and marinate, the possibilities are endless.   This is my favorite Thai Sauce company.  What i also love about AYARA PRODUCTS is that they also suggest a simple way to use the sauces, witch is great when using exotic sauces.   I love, love, love the balance of exotic flavors this AYARA Thai peanut sauce carries, a balance of sweet, thick peanut sauce with flavors that develop as you eat.  Gin Kaho!
