Maria del Mar Rodriguez Carnero, better known for stage name La Mari, born in Malaga, Spain and is the last original member of spanish flamenco chill music group Chambao.  Thus, the original band members of three have parted ways, La Mari being the only member to continue to carry the name Chambao for over 10 years and continues to release albums under Chambao.   The original band won many awards, also reaching international success, a path La Mari continues with new band members, still representing Chambao.  All of Chambao’s music from the past until now continues to be some of the greatest most relaxing music you can listen to, they deliver such relaxing spanish electronic fusion, mystical music that it is difficult no to enjoy, for their music itself carries you to a beach, under a tent with friends under the moonlight singing and dancing, the scene of a great time, that very musical feeling is what describes the word Chambao.

Chambao has been one of my favorite Spanish groups for about nine or ten years now, I’ve always been a fan and followed them when I had a MYspace and Facebook account and sometime in 2005, I had visited their blogs and found out about the sadness that La Mari was diagnosed with breast cancer.   I was very sad and angry by the news, the thought that one of my favorite singers could leave us, was a big fear for me.   So... I immediately  reached out via Myspace and sent her a short feel better note, she or her representative responded with a warm thanks for my support.    At that moment, i realized just how important Chambao was for me.    La Mari being the face of the group has become one with the name Chambao.  In 2006, her beautiful soft voice was heard at an internationally level with a successful duet with Ricky Martin’s MTV Unplugged single “Tu Recuerdo”.  The single was an international hit.  La Mari has had many other successful collaborations with many international artists.

Most important, La Mari has beat the battle against breast cancer, is doing great, and continues to spread her beautiful lyrics and music around the world.  La Mari has proven to be a warrior in all aspects of life.   She has written a book with her sister about her personal experiences in regards to cancer.  I speak for myself and the rest of her fans, we are so happy and lucky to have La Mari with us today.  It was very important for me to share La Mari with my audience and I was excited to do an interview with her.  Thus, she is extremely busy at this time, La Mari was kind enough to give me a written interview, which i am so grateful for, I asked some interesting questions, let’s get know her a little more.  Enjoy.

Many thanks to La Mari and her team for all their attention with our interview, we welcome you to the The Giselle Trujillo Show anytime you want.

How did you meet and come together as a group?

The band started as a group of three friends that used to get together after works, at the beach to chat and do music for a a while.  When our  first tour started we already had connections with other musicians and friends in the same environment and gradually we expanded the group according to the needs of time.

Who is the laziest, funniest and most energetic person in the group? I think in every moment each of us can be in those positions. It is a lot of time that we spent together and lottttts of laughter and funny stories we have lived, although I can tell you that the most energetic is possibly me,  I suppose jejeje.

What do you do when you have free time to do whatever you want?

I enjoy to the fullest, travel for pleasure, go see and hear live music, being home with the family, take care of my garden and my animals ... Living without any hurries and savoring every moment is one of the premises that i like to implement for myself, always, not only in my spare time.

Who do you admire the most in your life and why?

Before anything, my parents for giving me life, great thinkers, incredible musicians, ordinary people who everyday work hard and deal with difficult things like walking kilometers to find water or children who walk hours to go to school, people who care for other people or animals that suffer, the sick, ......

What makes you laugh the most, jokes, funny movies, someone that fell down, etc..? I like jokes, the Andalusian humor, a good movie, a ridiculous situation ... laugh with someone, never at someone. I like joy and smiling as a way a living.

Which three songs do you enjoy performing the most and why?

It’s difficult to choose 3 within so many albums, but maybe the most special ones or fun ones could be “Respira” (Breath, a song i composed for my parents), “Uleré” (for the lyrics and the 3x4 african rhythm) and “Detalles”  (Details, for it’s little tangos with sentiments (not referring to Argentinean tango genres)).

Before the group what job did you have and did you like it?

I previously worked with elderly people, in  a travel agency..... I went where i felt comfortable, where i had a good time and where I had to be at that moment. The truth is that  in reality I was really young when i started in this career and i did not have a lot of time to concentrate in a professional career, other than what i have today.

Do you have a favorite childhood memory?

A lot!!  Overall looking back, i have the feeling that i was a very happy child, I’m the youngest from four siblings and with parents that gave everything to make sure we lived well.    Of course I got yelled at few times, i’m very active, but everything has been and still is beautiful with my family and my immediate surroundings.

If you can retire tomorrow, what would you do?

I would keep searching for happiness and tranquillity, enjoy every moment and live my life where ever I am.

What are your favorite four foods?

There is a food in Malaga that I love, the Gazpacho, it’s a fish soup, potatoes, some greens, and bread, delicious (overall the one my mother makes, jeje).  I love a good breakfast, but overall that the foods are as little processed as possible, I’m a lover of slow means at the table along with some laughters.

What is the strangest thing you have eaten?

The strangest thing I tasted was in Mexico, along with Lila Downs, it was the grasshoppers, I think they are called fried grasshoppers.

What special things do you do aside from work?

I'm not lazy when I have things to do, obligations at home, at work ... I think that helps me to do many things at the end of the day and I finish tired but I feel good.

WHat is the strangest thing about you that people would be surprised to know

I consider myself a simple person.  I like being home, the ocean,my garden, traveling, watch and listen to music, share life with my friends, my family.... with time i have learned to  let go of things and travel lighter.

What would be a perfect day?

Some great news and a beautiful day ahead.

If you could be an animal, which animal would you be?

If i were an animal, i would like to be a dolphin, an eagle, a dog and a gazelle.

Is there a place on this earth you would all wish to perform at and why? Three are a lot of places I would like to perform at, impressive natural places that our planet has to offer us overwhelms me, from a desert to Perito Moreno, where we had the great luck of perform at in 2009At this time we preparing a global tour for 2014, where we will visit  iconic lands like Cuba, that right there is already a precious opportunity!

What are the first three things you do when you wake up?

I try not to jump out of bed until my body also wakes up, I think about the positive things the day will bring me ahead, I look out the window.....

What do you like to eat for breakfast?

I usually just drink coffee, I love toasted bread, olive oil, natural fruit juices, and depending where i am, I like to eat scrambled eggs with beans. I am a strong supporter of breakfast for an active day.

If you can bring a person to life, who would it be and why?

If i can bring a person to life, as a woman i am, i would bring my own children.  Ok, now, very well, if were talking about bringing another person back to life after dead, this would be very difficult, after dead that would be very complicated...... I would try to bring back someone very special to me.

If you can have one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

You make this very difficult for me!... Gazpacho? It’s healthy, nutritious, light.....Mediterranean food is is like complete like that, I love it.

You are very busy right now and going on tour soon, how is going everything going so far and what has excited you the most?

At each tour new initiatives, ideas, cities, people ... All this is very attractive although it is true that sometimes you'd want to stay home, quiet, if you have a flu... But when it’s  time to go on stage everything is forgotten and indeed at that time you feel that this is where you want to be.

Thank you very much for everything, it has been a pleasure!

Actually, La Mari, thank you for your time and beautiful interview.  Have a safe, fun and successful global tour 2014!

Mutli talented, composer, writer, musician, a family man, a friend, a gypsy.  I am describing one of Spain’s most influential artists, an artist welcomed and loved my fans from all around the world, Antonio Carmona.    Carmona is a proud gypsy from Granada, Spain, born into a family of  notable family  of musicians and singers “Los Habichuelas”.   Carmona was the lead singer of “Ketama” a successful band from Madrid, for about twenty years.  In  2006 Carmona went solo with great success.   His music is considered Flamenco-Fusion, thus never forgetting his gypsy roots.   Carmona is one of Spain’s most diverse singers and musicians, with a long resume of collaborations with notable international artists from all around the world including Camaron De La Isla, Paco DeLucia, Willie Nelson, Alejandro Sanz, Nelly Furtado, Ishtar, Rosario Flores and Juanes, just to name a few.

I have been the luckiest person, to have been granted this interview during his very busy schedule.   The original interview was video recorded, however, the quality and recording was of poor quality and I was able to salvage most of the content.   Please read the article on Antonio Carmona to get an insight on what this legendary gitano is all really feels, it’s a very interesting interview.

Show Antonio Carmona some love, tell him Giselle Trujillo sent you.   You can purchase his songs via Itunes, Spoofy  & Universal Music Store.

Giselle:

Hello Antonio, how are you?

Antonio:

Hello Gisella.   I’m well ... (part of the bonus video) we moved to Miami eight months ago.  My daughter have been here for three years already.  We are educating them well.  They speak three languages, English, French and Spanish.   I come form a very educated family and that is what we teach my daughters.  Giselle, the education in my family was very important., even though it was a school education, my parents taught us to be respectful and to have education.

Giselle:

Yes, Antonio, that's true, the education starts at home and it’s worth a lot.  Very important.

Antonio:

Us gypsies, we speak Romani and I am very gypsy.  I love my culture, I also believe in god.  He has given us life.   And the gypsies, we are very united.  If anyone needs anything, we are there.   Our flamenco celebrations are very religious, the singers’ neck veins will pop, because when we sing we give it our all.  The flamenco carries a lot of emotions.  We sing the sadness, as well as the happiness and the pain.   We are very gypsies, my family is the “Habichuela family”, you know?  We have some incredible singers, Lola Flores, do you know who she is?, Camaron, Paco De Lucia....

Giselle:

Yes, yes of course.  The Flores, Lola Flores.   My mother used to play a lot of Spanish records.

Antonio:

Yes?  And, how did that happen?

Giselle:

Ahh, us Dominican’s love flamenco.  At that time they played a lot of Camilo Sesto, Lola Flores, Lolita Flores, Juan manuel Serat, Rocio Durcal and I grew up listening to a lot of Spanish flamenco, latin music and that is why i am fascinated by anything flamenco.

Antonio:

We really like Dominican Republic a lot, when we go, we stay with a very good friend of ours, Juan luis Guerra.

Giselle:

Ai, that’s good, I love Juan Luis Guerra, one of the best of Dominican singers.  Tell him I say hello.

Antonio:

Ok, will do.

Giselle:

Ai, no, no, no Antonio wait....  My dream was to meet Camaron De La Isla y Cesaria Evora.  How incredible is the voice of Camaron, that man was incredible.

Antonio:

Cesaria Evora???  I brought her to Spain one time, good people.   I was able to work with Camaron, the man was a monster of a singer.  Camaron would fill a stadium with his amazing vocals, he did not need any instruments, he was a monster of a singer.    He was good people with a lot of talent.  His story is very sad, he did  not have a good life, Camaron had a very difficult life.

Giselle:

I know my favorite song by Camaron that i wish you can one day sing, is one that goes like this  “Cádiz tenía una perla, perla de la mar salada, con unos grandes morunos, que cantaba esa gitana.  Con fatigas un preso decía, que cuál era la campanita, que impone más.”  That song decomposes me, his voice, so incredible, fills me with a lot of emotions!

Antonio:

What’s the name?

Giselle:

I forgot the name as this moment, but Paco De Lucia was playing the guitar and, something about lime (after interview, song is Limon de cera).

Antonio:

Sounds familiar.

Giselle:

Well, it’s difficult because i sang it wrong, out of tune.

Antonio:

You know, we are from Granada.  The Habichuela family we are all guitarists.   Do you know the Habichuelas?

Giselle:

Yes, yes, of course.  Your family, some of Spain’s most well known.

Antonio:

We are Andalus, my father traveled a lot and used to bring us international music.  That is why, I like experimenting with different music genres, I like the fusion a lot.  But my guitar and Cajon go everywhere with me.

Giselle:

Antonio, that was one of my questions, how was it growing up in a family that, sings, plays the guitars, how was that musical and familiar environment?  I imagine that the competition was incredible, with so many talents.

Antonio:

Look Giselle, I’ve had to work very hard since 13 years old.  With the “tablaos” in he bars, play and sing.   The people used to fall asleep and i had to continue, until they wake up to pay me.   It was very difficult for me.   All my life I’ had to work every night and it was very difficult.

Giselle:

Aii Antonio, i can imagine, so young..... you deserve everything you have today.  You have worked too hard.  You know, I go to Youtube a lot to watch a lot of gypsies and flamencos.    A few years ago, i found a short video of a flamenco party with Niña Pastori, your family and you were there playing the cajon.  I loved it!

Antonio:

Ah, yes, yes, yes.  Look Giselle, that was a gypsy party that an Argentina friend of mine, wanted to have the experience of how a real gypsy party is, I invited him and he recorded.

Giselle:

Wow! Antonio, I can only dream of attending a gypsy party, i get very emotional, that I will come out of there singing and dancing like areal gypsy.  Antonio, I swear, i must have been a gypsy or arabic in my past life.  It’s that i just love everything that has to do with this cultures.  Looks, I learned to speak, write and read some Arabic and I also listen to a Indian music.

Antonio:

Ah, yeah?

Giselle:

I love flamenco, it goes right to the heart, a lot of emotion in the voice and the guitar, it can brake your heart, it’s a music full of emotions.

Antonio:

That is what flamenco is and being a gypsy.  We give everything for a gypsy celebration.  Look Giselle, i will tell you something, we the gypsies are hardworking, and very united.  I have a cousin, who worked an entire year for his wedding day, he spent all his money in  a few days of celebrations, because gypsy celebrations last for days and days.     Look, the next day, my cousin, had no money to eat.  That’s how we are gypsies.

Giselle:

Wow! incredible.  But you enjoy of the moment a lot, true?

Antonio:

Yes, of course.  Always, we gypsies are very happy people.   Wherever we arrive, a party forms.

Giselle:

A gypsy rumba.  I would love to be in a gypsy party.

Antonio:

Come to spain, we have our home there, invite your boyfriend and go, we will wait for you there.

Giselle:

Look Antonio!!!  I’m getting excited already.  When? When?  Tell me, we will get there.  Thank you brother, the same, you already know that Mariola and you are welcome here in our home.

Giselle:

Antonio, tell me something, before i forget, how are the new recordings going, do you have a name for the album and will you have any collaborations with other artists?

Antonio:

No, i don’t have a name yet, but yes it will be a tremendous album and yes, with a lot of fusion.  I’m working with a huge producer, that is great.  I’m really very busy with this project.  I want to invite you to the launching of my new album in Miami.

Giselle:

For when?

Antonio:

I’m hoping for September.

Giselle:

In Miami, in september?

Antonio:

Yes.

Giselle:

Ok, we will be there, I can’t wait.  Thank you.

Antonio:

You know where, I want to visit?

Giselle:

Where?

Antonio:

I would love to visit Nashville, something i’ve been listening to is country music, it appeals a lot to me and I would love to go visit Nashville, from where a lot great artists come from.

Giselle:

Wow! Yes! country music is a very popular genre and yes Nashville is the capital of country music.

Giselle:

Antonio, changing the topic a bit, you have some Hindu traits in you, they say that gypsies came from India.

Antonio:

Yes, we have a lot, have you watched the Latchon Drom movie?

Giselle:

No, have not heard of it, what is it about?

Antonio:

Giselle, you will love this movie.  It’s about how connected we are as gypsies to the Indian gypsies, the movie is beautiful, it only about the music and how they traveled to different countries till they arrive in spain.  You must watch it.  I will write it down for you, “Lachom Drom”.   Find it, you will love it and then you let me know.

Giselle:

Ok, I will look for it in YouTube.

Antonio:

I would like to change what people think of gypsies, there is not a good perception, that this and that........ it’s very sad.

Giselle:

That they steal, the partying..... I already know my brother.

Antonio:

Exactly, we have a lot to offer.   But Giselle, right now there is a huge problem in spain.  We are not united as spaniards.   There is an incredible separation within the music.  They are not  playing the flamenco....

Giselle:

It’s deterioration.

Antonio:

Yes, it’s being reduced, less and less flamenco is being played.  We can’t live like this and that is why we travel a lot.  Let’s see, what is spain recognized for?  The Flamenco and bull fights.   And it’s a politic that is killing the flamenco.   Giselle, I went through a very big depression for a while because my music was not being played.   The radio is no longer playing flamenco.  And that is why i decided to come to Miami, where i received an incredible amount of support.     The spaniards here, we are more united.   Look Giselle, so many are calling me for interviews but I chose to give you the interview,  because i see that you really are interested in my culture and our music.  I am really busy these days working with a phenomenal producer.   Giselle, I have to leave in a few minutes.

Giselle:

Aiii, Antonio thank you so much my brother, i really appreciate it.   I can’t believe it.   But, very sad what’s going on.  And tell me, Antonio, what are we going to do?  Spain without Flamenco, will never be the same.   You are the ones that have given so much to the culture.  And i know you are not God, but the responsibilities fall on you.  With your music and through your talents, of your music partner, you can make the difference.

Antonio:

Look Giselle in spain we have everything and not a lot of exporting or trading with other countries exists.  The government is not doing the right things.  We are lacking unity.  How can it be that us the spaniards can’t live in our own country?  That we can’t enjoy it

Giselle:

No, no it’s not fair.  We have to change that mentality.  Antonio, you can do a lot, it will be difficult, but I know if you bring together your family and your musician friends  you can start a revolution and you all will be heard.   Tell me, you can count on me, I’m ready.  what can I help with?

Antonio:

Ai, Giselle, it’s not easy.

Giselle:

Antonio, you will make history, i know, spain is your country and you all can do it.

Antonio:

Giselle, that’s the plan, I’m trying, but you know how politics are.  Spain is in a very ugly situation a this time.

Giselle:

Let’s start a revolution, that I am also a gypsy.  Antonio let’s do something about this, move mountains.

Antonio:

Ok, let’s see.  I have to go.

Giselle:

Ohm no, don’t go.  I want to continue to touch on this topic.

Antonio:

We can finish when I get back from the studio.

Giselle:

Ok, perfect, let me know, and we finish later.  Ok, ok, ciao, ciao.  Have a good time, strong hugs,  thank you for your time.

Antonio:

Thank you.   A kiss.  Muah, muah!

Giselle:

Muah, muah, till next time.

During our conversation, i spoke a little bit with Mariola, his beautiful wife, that showed me their home (a mini tour) in Miami,  I briefly said hello to his daughters, they also put their little dog on camera to say hello to me, soo cute.   What a pity that our encounter was no recorded properly.  Until next time.

Thank you Antonio Carmona and your team for all your attention.   You are welcome to the The Giselle Trujillo Show anytime you want.

One of Spain’s most influential artist, Antonio Carmona, known for his soft fiery gypsy voice, collaborations with world artists,  his spanish cajon and flamenco guitar.   Carmona is a proud gypsy and is one of the responsible artists for flamenco-fusion.

CONCHA BUIKA

My deepest apologies to Buika and our audience for my poor quality recordings, I will get Buika back on the show when she is available.

In the meantime, please enjoy her beautiful phone interview, she is such a warm person, kind and very down to earth, the way she really is.

I hope you enjoy!  Peace, Love & Hugs!

1st song on interview is:

“ Te Camelo ”

2nd song on interview is :

“New Afro Spanish Generation“

Eclectic, profound and raspy voice Spanish singer from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Concha Buika born as María Concepción Balboa Buika, known as, stage name “Buika”.   Besides being a singer, a music producer, poet and composer, Buika is full of culture, organic energy, philosophy, beauty and wisdom.  Buika entered the music industry in 2000 and the journey has been non-stop for this Flamenco, Soul, Jazz, Copla artist with eight albums, Grammy nominations, to international sold out concerts under her belt.   Buika’s career continues to succeed with more and more demands for her music each year.    But more than music, this humble, sweet and kind woman sings directly from her heart, known to be one of the most profound speaking artists in the world.   Buika’s philosophy on life is so rare and simple that that I almost feel she is coming from another world of understanding delivering organic and peaceful meaning.    With that said, it is safe to notice that Buika has broken both personal and career barriers with her positive melodic messages.   Buika has had great collaborations with notable artists, she sings in Spanish, English and even produces unique vocal sounds.  She refers to herself as a “free note” and promotes freedom through her music.    She has accomplished the elements of what a true singer is about, her music is art, her voice tells a story, a story so flawlessly delivered.   Buika has that special magic in her voice, that when i watch her sing, even if i know her lyrics, i refuse to sing along.  A respect very few artists demand.   Concha Buika, has her own signature sound that carries distinguished and intricate vocal chords.  She is like fresh water in a glass, clear about her music and refreshing.   Buika is undoubtedly our modern day Camaron De La Isla, one of Spain’s greatest Flamenco singer with the soul jazz power of  the legendary American singer Ella Fitzgerald!

Show Buika some love, tell her Giselle Trujillo sent you.   You can purchase her songs via Itunes & Amazon.  Trust me, you will also love Buika.

MUZZ SKILLINGS

Great interview!  Giselle & Muzz sit down for a good hour of conversations.    Enjoy!

1st song on interview is:

“ Spoon Feed ”

2nd song on interview is :

“Up Against The Wall(s)“

A multi Grammy Award Winner, multi talent from New York.  Shall I say more? Songwriter, bassist, guitarist (actually plays the drums and piano as well), a singer, engineer, composer and entrepreneur.   The list goes on and on, but i must introduce him already.  I am describing Muzz Skillings, a wealth of talent, but behind all the talent, he is also filled with a caring heart for all things concerning humanity.

Skillings is a familiar face and name to the music industry, he was one of the original band members for the all American rock band Living Colour.    While Muzz was with the band, the band won two consecutive Grammys, they swept the MTV Awards, as well as winning other critical awards, the only band to have achieved such accomplishments.  Skillings, left the band in 1992.  Afterwards, not only did Skillings receive notable offers from industry giants, but he had the greatest honor of working with the legendary Michael Jackson during his Germany tour, and music video for Michael's song “Give in to me” released in 1993, part of the Dangerous album, a once in a lifetime opportunity that both Skillings and guitarist Slash shared the same stage with the king of pop, Michael Jackson.  Skilllings has worked with some of the industries most notable musicians and artists.

One of Muzz’s trademarks is playing the base with his fretting hand over the neck of the bass, the only player on this planet to play that way 100% of the time.   He is the founder and lead for rock band “Medicine Stick”, a name of great meaning and depth.

Skillings is a very private person and I have been so lucky to get this exclusive interview with him.  Enjoy!

Giselle sits down with the talented Muzz Skillings, musician, multi Grammy winner,

ex original band member of all American rock band “Living Colour”.
