CULTURE OF THE MONTH

REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN

By Giselle Trujillo

Republic of Tajikistan is a country of very little conversation, located in Asia bordering with China on the northeast, Pakistan and Afghanistan on the south,  Uzbekistan on the west and Krgyzstan on the north with an estimated eight million people.  The country is mostly of mountainous landscape  with a main production of cotton, dried apricots and aluminum, hosting one of the biggest aluminum plants in the world.   Republic of Tajikistan became independent in 1991 from Soviet Union.  The people speak Tajik (a modern Persian dialect) and as well as Russian and are of sunni islam belief.  It’s main sport is football, thus many outdoor sports are practiced, hiking, climbing and such sports.  The people are of Uzbek, Russian, Tajik ethnic groups and the region has been recognized to go back to at least the fourth millennium BCE linking also to the bronze ages.  Thus, the country is not one of the wealthiest countries, it is a known to have an improving economy.   Through my research it seems that Republic of Tajikistan is a happy culture, very united, beautiful people, colorful, laid back with a lot of food gatherings with breathtaking natural landscapes.

LIVING SPACE

A NOTE FROM EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, GISELLE TRUJILLO

Your living space is your realm, your peaceful space, your private space, your place to relax, your happy place, your everything.    That is why your space should be everything you ever wanted, comfortable, fun and a reflection of you.   Don’t collect to collect dust, if you are a collector like I am, then collect to appreciate.  Purchase significant articles that will add to your space not clutter it.  My personal favorite styles are eclectic, rustic, antique, shabby chic and Bohemian.  I’ve searched the internet finding some of the most beautiful living spaces and gardens for you.    Enjoy your space!

WHAT IS INTERIOR DESIGN

Interior design is the collection of related articles placed strategically in a dedicated space in order to express a concept,  a style,  an era, a scene and/or  a mood.  Usually a reflection of ones taste, ideas and preferences.

THE MOST DELICIOUS MARMALADES!

By: Editor-In-Chief Giselle Trujillo, October 2014

I’ve tasted some of the worlds most amazing marmalades and when i met “NAR” marmalades from Turkey, I knew the competition was difficult. During the Fancy Food Show, only four out of hundreds marmalades  impressed me, “NAR” was my top favorite.  Here is what caught my taste buds attention,  “NAR” marmalades are not loaded too sweet, in fact they are mild with natural flavors, tasty and true to it’s fruits.  These marmalades play well with cheese, crackers, breads, pancakes, waffles, crepes, yogurts, cottage cheeses and even on plain vanilla or chocolate ice cream and honestly..... the possibilities are endless.

“NAR” marmalades are exquisite in flavor.  My personal favorite so far is the “NAR” Fig Marmalade, it is delicious and elegant!  Best of all they are all naturally artisan crafted with simple ingredients, the fruit, sugar, a natural fruit juice for balance and water.  “NAR” is one of my favorite marmalades , ah... did i mention DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Visit the “NAR” website  www.nargourmet.com for all their amazing marmalades and full product line.

THE MOST UNIQUE RUSSIAN CHOCOLATES !

By: Editor-In-Chief Giselle Trujillo, October 2014

“ALIONKA” chocolates are in my opinion one of the most unique chocolates, from the elegant vintage packaging to their flavors. These chocolates are not your everyday chocolates, “ALIONKA” chocolates are not overly sweet, meaning these chocolates are very delicate and enjoyable.

Here’s a little bit of history and why I love “ALIONKA” chocolates, they have been around for over thirty years and after speaking to many Russian friends, “ALIONKA” is a favorite amongst Russians who grew up indulging in“ALIONKA” chocolates.  They come in many flavors, plain milk chocolate, nuts and raisins and many more.   I ‘ve tried them all and love them all.

In September, I was in charge for the party favors for a baby shower and I chose “ALIONKA” chocolate bars with milk filling for it’s impressive vintage baby face packaging and it’s delicious delicate tasting mini chocolate bars inside.   The chocolates were a hit!

Visit the Russian Table website www.russiantable.com for the complete “ALIONKA” chocolate line and all their amazing Russian products.

UNION RESTAURANT

HAVERSTRAW, NY

One of our favorites fine dining restaurants in New York.   Most important this is a restaurant that is operated with great integrity both on a gastronomical and quality level.  This is very well well maintained and clean restaurant.  With that said this restaurant meets all of our expectations from excellent guest services (professionally trained and very friendly staff with uniform, even to the valet guy), clean, perfect ambient lighting, well decorated, perfect music volume, timely dish arrival, excellent food presentation and outstanding food quality.  We frequent this restaurant for all those qualities.

The partners and owners are chef Jose David Fernandez from El Salvador and Paulo Feteria from France of Portuguese background, whom with their food industry experiences form Union restaurant, delivering exquisite and exotic latin fusion flavors.  Union offers some of the most delicious dishes we’ve ever had.  Every table is treated to fresh thick slices of bread with butter on the side.  Here are some of our personal favorites that will take you to heaven and back to Union again and again, the Guacamole Caramba (guacamole with crabmeat and smoked paprika corn chips) amazing! For the season, we had the Corn and Pumpkin soup that was to die for, the Salmon Tartar, amazing scallops, perfect ahi tuna, one of the greatest fried calamari with two seperate dipping sauces, the Papa Al Horno (baked potato with seafood and lobster sauce), the specials are always delicious!, and our favorite desserts are the coconut ice cream, their bread pudding, their tres leches and recently tried their exquisite fig cake which was out of this world.   This is a large restaurant with indoor and patio seating and with their own organic vegetable garden above the restaurant.   Union is not just one the greatest fine dinning restaurants in Rockland County, back in 2009 the owners launched an innovative way to give back to the community, the “We Care Foundation”, a yearly event serving complimentary food for the community.    What a beautiful and generous gesture of giving back.

Am I the only person who can’t decide for a dish at a restaurant?

Or do you also have this problem.  I recently found out, that i am more than capable of sitting in a restaurant and knowing exactly what i want, rare, but it has happened and only when i am craving for it.  Sooo, yeah, this happens when i go for that specific dish i love so much.  Aside from that, it is extremely difficult for me to make up my mind, hence my boyfriend always orders for us.   He knows me too well, asks what i’m in the mood to eat and takes it from there, I‘m usually the patient one but when it comes to dining he is usually the more patient one.  I could be a little difficult when making dining decisions, which can take me over 30 minutes to decide, then i go back and forth amongst two, I’ve always had this problem.

The apple does not fall far the tree, nope, I’m not alone, my mother is 100 times worse than i am, my father always orders for her and honestly don’t know how he does it.  I will never forget the first time i took my mother out for lunch, t was just the two of us and what a nightmare it was, we had zero idea of what we wanted to get, we kept going back and forth, it took us about an hour to place our order, it was so painful, finally i had to ask the waiter for recommendations and everything he recommended we did not order.  I’ve learned my lessons, if alone with my mother go to a restaurant where i know the menu really well.

So, I have psychoanalyzed my problem, it all boils down to me being afraid that i wont have a pleasant experience, because i am very critical when it comes to food and when i find what i love, i am loyal to it forever.   Hence, i have my favorite restaurants.  I love cooking for us and i  leave the comfort of my home it better be amazing.   So verdict is simple, I just want to have a positive experience and afraid of having a bad meal, like if I were home, that’s all.    Or is there other issues?   Does this happen to you also?  I would like to know, email us.
