THE GREATEST MOST UNIQUE LATIN PAINTER
FRIDA KAHLO
JULY 6, 1907 - JULIO 13, 1954
ART
The colorful, controversial and unique artist known as Frida Kahlo was born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderon in “The bLue House” (her parent’s house) Coyoacan, Mexico City, Mexico in July 6, 1907. Her father was a German who traveled to Mexico at the young age of nineteen, her mother was a Spanish Amerindian, Khalo was the third of four daughters. Kahlo was born with spina bifida and contracted polio at the age of six. She lived throughout the Mexican War. Thus she had a weak left leg, she practiced boxing and other sports. As if things could not get worse, on September 17, 1925 Khalo was ridding a bus that collied with a trolley car which resulted in her suffering serious injuries of a broken collarbone, pelvis, spinal column, ribs, dislocated shoulder, a crushed and dislocated right foot, eleven fractures to her right leg, an iron handrail stabbed her abdomen and uterus, risking her capacity to reproduce. Kahlo spent three month in a cast recovering, with 35 surgeries and a great amount of pain through her life. Due to her medical complications Kahlo conceived three times, however pregnancies had to terminated. These events changed her path from her studies in medicine to painted, which is what kept her occupied, she self portrait due to her immobility, stating “I paint myself because i am often alone and because I am the subject I know best”. Her father lent Kahlo his box of oil paints along with brushes and her mother made her a a special easel she could paint.
Much of Kahlo’s artwork was Diego Rivera inspired, a great Mexican artist who she admired. In 1927 she showed Rivera four of her painting and which he became impressed. He began visiting her at her Blue House giving her encouragements, motivation, strengthening and sharing skills with Kahlo. That motivation and strength is what led her to pursue a career as a painter. Rivera and Kahlo married in 1929. The marriage was a troubled one with strong personalities, Kahlos affairs with both men and women, Rivera knew of them, thus was jealous of her affairs with other men. By 1938 she had her first solo exhibition in the USA, which became a success. Kahlo’s became angry when she found out that Rivera had an affair with her younger sister, this resulted in divorce in 1939, remarrying again in 1940 which was another disaster and living separately.
A few days before July 13, 1954, Kahlo wrote this “I hope the exit is joyful-and i hope never to return-Frida”. A few days later at 47 years old on July 13, 1954 Kahlo died. As per her wishes to be cremated, an autopsy was not performed with suspicions that she had overdosed accidentally or not, the official cause of her death was given as a pulmonary failure, perhaps because Kahlo was a smoker. Her Bule House remains a musenm since 1958, the very same place her ashes lay.
Kahlo is known for her unibrow trademark, Colorful Mexican outfits, hair styles and for her self portraits. Kahlo’s was a proud Mexican who reflected her culture in her paintings, her artwork depicted her life and pain.
